    Ngarukuruwala - we sing: the songs of the Tiwi Islands, Northern Australia

    Through an analysis of Tiwi song composition techniques and comparison between performances recorded over the last hundred years, I give, for the first time in the literature, a comprehensive musical description of the Tiwi song repertory, showing that while it is primarily based on innovation, it forms a continuum of oral tradition, relying upon the acquisition of complex musical, linguistic and poetic composition skills. I place the Tiwi initiation ceremony, Kulama, as the centre-point of song creativity and instruction and suggest that its near-disappearance, along with social and linguistic change, have put the future of Tiwi extemporised song practice in jeopardy. The framework for this study is the repatriation to the Tiwi community of ethnographic field–recordings of Tiwi songs, made between 1912 and 1981, archived at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) in Canberra. Drawing from the corpus of approximately 1300 recorded song items, I find that the fundamentally contemporary, topical and current nature of the Tiwi song culture has resulted in a rich social, cultural and historical oral record being preserved amongst the song texts. Documenting the physical, emotional and artistic journeys of a particular group of elders who travelled to Canberra to reclaim the recordings, I recount some of the outcomes of the reclamation and I discuss the impact the recordings’ return is having on the current performance practice, the future of song knowledge transmission and the future of improvisatory composition skills. In the context of Ngarukuruwala- we sing songs, a collaborative music project involving a group of song-women from the Tiwi Islands and jazz musicians from Sydney, I also report on new music projects instigated by a group of Tiwi women who are working to maintain and develop song and language skills in young Tiwi people, negotiating new forms of music while maintaining Tiwi song traditions

    Psychological ownership (PO) can be an important tool for organizations to encourage productivity and certain desirable employee behaviours. In the organizational literature, PO is the sense of ownership over a “target”: not only physical objects, but a concept, a job, or the whole organization. It can express itself in positive ways, such as higher motivation; but it also has potentially negative effects, such as territoriality. This briefing looks closely at the literature to understand the various dimensions of PO, and how organizations can foster the positive aspects of it to help improve employees’ experiences in the workplace by fostering morale while contributing to productivity. By bringing together the most relevant research on the topic, this briefing also highlights areas that are still underdeveloped, such as collective PO, the role of culture, and the employee perspective

    Bibliography: p. 125-141.The phytohormone ethylene is essential to many plant developmental processes, of which the control of climacteric fruit ripening is among the best characterised. However this hormone eventually causes fruit rotting which results in a non-marketable product. One approach to reduce ethylene synthesis in plants is metabolism of its immediate precursor, 1-aminocyclopropane-1carboxylic acid (ACC). This can be achieved through degradation of ACC by the enzyme ACC deaminase to form α-ketobutyric acid and ammonia. ACC degrading soil microorganisms were identified by their ability to grow on ACC as a sole nitrogen source. Enzyme assays indicated that Pseudomonas had high ACC deaminase gene-specific primers and probes respectively revealed that only one bacterium, Pseudomonas fluerescens strain 17, had a gene with homology to previously sequenced ACC deaminase genes

    Mentoring Graduate Students to Become Effective Teaching Assistants: Developing and Implementing a Student-Centred Program for Nursing

    Teaching in the health professions, including nursing, requires specialized educational strategies that meet the needs of the current generation of learners. Currently there is a shortage of experienced post-secondary educators in nursing, possibly exacerbated by inadequate Teaching Assistant (TA) professional development programs. Most literature describes TA professional development programs that involve undergraduate students employed as TAs, and few consider how programs can mentor graduate students to develop their instructional skills, contribute to courses, and enhance their careers. There are limited reports in the Canadian context. In this article we outline the rationale, development, and implementation of a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) mentorship program for graduate students at a school of nursing located in western Canada. Our aim is to provide mentorship and experience in educational strategies to graduate students, to help mentor and educate future nursing educators who are experienced post-secondary teachers. We discuss the rationale for offering the GTA mentorship program, followed by a description of the GTA mentorship program components. We highlight the role of the Senior TA, an experienced GTA who takes a leadership role in coordinating the program. Importantly, we discuss how knowledge related to cultural safety is presented, and how it has been adapted over time to meet GTAs’ needs. Finally, we discuss the evolution of a school of nursing GTA mentorship program, located in western Canada and we describe future changes to the program in order to remain relevant to the needs of graduate students in nursing, faculty and administration, and undergraduate nursing students. L’enseignement dans les professions de la santé, y compris les sciences infirmières, nécessite des stratégies pédagogiques répondant aux besoins de la génération actuelle d’apprenantes. Nous connaissons actuellement une pénurie d’enseignantes en sciences infirmières, possiblement aggravée par l’inadéquation des programmes de développement professionnel pour les auxiliaires d’enseignement (Teaching Assistant; TA). La littérature sur le sujet décrit surtout les programmes de développement professionnel pour les étudiantes de premier cycle qui sont embauchées comme auxiliaires d’enseignement; peu considèrent la façon dont les programmes peuvent soutenir les étudiantes des cycles supérieurs pour leur permettre de développer leurs habiletés d’enseignement, de contribuer aux cours, et d’améliorer leurs perspectives de carrière. Peu de rapports font état du contexte canadien. Dans cet article, nous justifions et exposons brièvement l’élaboration et la mise en œuvre d’un programme de mentorat pour les auxiliaires d’enseignement qui sont étudiantes aux cycles supérieurs (Graduate Teaching Assistant; GTA) dans une école de sciences infirmières de l’Ouest canadien. Notre objectif est d’offrir du mentorat ainsi qu’une expérience permettant à des étudiantes des cycles supérieurs de pratiquer des stratégies pédagogiques, afin de contribuer à la formation de nouvelles enseignantes chevronnées en sciences infirmières. Nous présentons le rationnel pour offrir un tel programme de mentorat pour les étudiants des cycles supérieurs et en décrivons les composantes. Nous soulignons le rôle de l’auxiliaire sénior, une auxiliaire expérimentée jouant un rôle de leader dans la coordination du programme. Chose importante, nous discutons de la manière de présenter les connaissances sur la sécurité culturelle, ainsi que de l’adaptation au fil du temps pour répondre aux besoins des auxiliaires d’enseignement.     Characteristics of Positive Deviants in Western Chimpanzee Populations

    With continued expansion of anthropogenically modified landscapes, the proximity between humans and wildlife is continuing to increase, frequently resulting in species decline. Occasionally however, species are able to persist and there is an increased interest in understanding such positive outliers and underlying mechanisms. Eventually, such insights can inform the design of effective conservation interventions by mimicking aspects of the social-ecological conditions found in areas of species persistence. Recently, frameworks have been developed to study the heterogeneity of species persistence across populations with a focus on positive outliers. Applications are still rare, and to our knowledge this is one of the first studies using this approach for terrestrial species conservation. We applied the positive deviance concept to the western chimpanzee, which occurs in a variety of social-ecological landscapes. It is now categorized as Critically Endangered due to hunting and habitat loss and resulting excessive decline of most of its populations. Here we are interested in understanding why some of the populations did not decline. We compiled a dataset of 17,109 chimpanzee survey transects (10,929 km) across nine countries and linked them to a range of social and ecological variables. We found that chimpanzees seemed to persist within three social-ecological configurations: first, rainforest habitats with a low degree of human impact, second, steep areas, and third, areas with high prevalence of hunting taboos and low degree of human impact. The largest chimpanzee populations are nowadays found under the third social-ecological configuration, even though most of these areas are not officially protected. Most commonly chimpanzee conservation has been based on exclusion of threats by creation of protected areas and law enforcement. Our findings suggest, however, that this approach should be complemented by an additional focus on threat reduction, i.e., interventions that directly target individual human behavior that is most threatening to chimpanzees, which is hunting. Although changing human behavior is difficult, stakeholder co-designed behavioral change approaches developed in the social sciences have been used successfully to promote pro-environmental behavior. With only a fraction of chimpanzees and primates living inside protected areas, such new approaches might be a way forward to improve primate conservation

    The Critically Endangered western chimpanzee declines by 80%

    African large mammals are under extreme pressure from unsustainable hunting and habitat loss. Certain traits make large mammals particularly vulnerable. These include late age at first reproduction, long inter-birth intervals, and low population density. Great apes are a prime example of such vulnerability, exhibiting all of these traits. Here we assess the rate of population change for the western chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes verus, over a 24-year period. As a proxy for change in abundance, we used transect nest count data from 20 different sites archived in the IUCN SSC A.P.E.S. database, representing 25,000 of the estimated remaining 35,000 western chimpanzees. For each of the 20 sites, datasets for 2 different years were available. We estimated site-specific and global population change using Generalized Linear Models. At 12 of these sites, we detected a significant negative trend. The estimated change in the subspecies abundance, as approximated by nest encounter rate, yielded a 6% annual decline and a total decline of 80.2% over the study period from 1990 to 2014. This also resulted in a reduced geographic range of 20% (657,600 vs. 524,100 km2). Poverty, civil conflict, disease pandemics, agriculture, extractive industries, infrastructure development, and lack of law enforcement, are some of the many reasons for the magnitude of threat. Our status update triggered the uplisting of the western chimpanzee to “Critically Endangered” on the IUCN Red List. In 2017, IUCN will start updating the 2003 Action Plan for western chimpanzees and will provide a consensus blueprint for what is needed to save this subspecies. We make a plea for greater commitment to conservation in West Africa across sectors.
